RE: Axle Alignment Question

The axles turned out to be fine and within specs on alignment. Shackle bolts were a bit loose and were all re-tightened. The problem turned out to be tire related. The left side tires were fine; the two right side tires were showing major center of tread bulges (as in tread separation). (These are crappy Towmax tires)
New tires will be installed tomorrow... Either one of these two tires could have easily failed during our last trip.

RE: Cameo and Carri-Lite 30 ft wall slideouts

I would join the Carriage forum on Yahoo Groups and ask the people that own one. Easy link - just click
BTW, you will have to request to join the group.
It is my understanding that the big monster slide has three motors moving it. Don't know if that is true or not, but it seems reasonable. The other thing, it doesn't stick out all that far compared to other Carriage models so it should be less of a hassle moving it.

RE: Engine temps

Bob J,
It all depends on what kind of weight you are dragging around and the grade. I finally got my cooling fan to kick in last week towing about 13500 up a very steep road. It's normal and the fan kicking in will kick in and bring it down very quickly. BTW, the outside temperatures were in the 60s. When you are pulling a big hill, you have the throttle open and you are burning lots of fuel. You are going to generate heat.
The 2004.5s may or may not have had a cooling problem (I never did). The 2008 trucks are a completely different animal and they do not have overheating issues. You can crank up the A/C, ignore the outside temps, and enjoy the tow. The cooling system will work fine and no, you won't overheat.
Even if you did get too hot, the computer will reduce power until you cool down.

RE: Axle Alignment Question

I just returned from a trip and noticed that the spacing between the wheels had changed. The curbside tires were only about an inch apart vs. the normal 2-3 inches.
I have an appointment with a frame alignment shop on Thursday to get this looked at. The tech I talked to thought maybe the axle shackle bolts had allowed the axle to move in relation to the spring pack. I'll let you know tomorrow.

RE: Faulty Propane Changeover Valve

Here's one other thing to try before you replace the valve: All of the new style tanks have an automatic shut off if the valve detects a leak (i.e. gas escaping too rapidly). Try shutting the valve off and then opening it very slowly.
I had the same thing happen recently (right in the middle of cooking dinner, of course) and remembered that these valves will shut down for high gas flow. I shut everything down (barbecue and stove), closed the valve, waited a few minutes and then opened the valve slowly. I reignited the stove a BBQ and every has run fine since. BTW, only one of my tanks acted like this.

RE: Carriage Cameo Slide Problem

I have a 2006 Cameo with the "old" slide drive system. No problems whatsoever. However, I know a few Carri-lite owners who have 2007 and 2008 models who have had multiple drives replaced. Apparently, Carriage (or more likely RBW) changed the design to speed up the slide mechanism. Unlike the old system, the new motor/gear assembly has no gear lash adjustment and seems to chew teeth off at a fairly regular basis.
I've also learned that the Carriage service manager finely got to see one fail in the "wild" (at the Carriage Grand National Rally) - maybe a better fix will be forth coming.

RE: Mor/Ryde Kingpin

I to have a Mor/Ryde pin box and LE suspension. To be honest, I've never tried the air pin boxes but I look at how they are supposed to stop chucking and doesn't seem logical that they would.
As to up/down movement, I've never really experienced any with the fiver trying to go up and down vs. what the truck suspension does. All I can tell you is that I can see the trailer moving on the Mor/Ryde and not feel any of the movement in the truck. The only time I do feel anything is when there is an extremely bad road (for example, I-295 on the west side Richmond).

RE: Strange sound in rear of 08 3550 DRW

While I don't believe you will see this on any schedule maintainance schedule, it is recommended that at between 2000-3000 miles you change the rear end lube and replace it with synthetic.
When I had this done recently, my service adviser pulled me aside and said "You did the right thing. If only I could get my other customers to do this on their HD trucks."

RE: 2007 Silverado CD player gets HOT

Every vehicle I have ever owned with a built in CD player seems to toast them. Not sure why. If your truck is still under warranty, have your dealer replace the CD player (probably will have to replace the entire radio unit).

RE: doubletree select suites brakes

Even if you end up with disc brakes, your GMC IBC may still work. You will need to try it and, if you have problems, try putting a brake magnet in line with the circuit. The integrated controllers need to "see" the brake magnets to know whether or not they are connected.

RE: Little DPF insight

All of this sounds like when we first put EGR valves on cars - like almost 50 years ago. Most of the pollution control technology used on diesel trucks and cars was developed in Europe and is in use daily on millions of vehicles. After all diesel vehicles make up at least 50% of their new vehicle sales and the technology does work.
The biggest pollution problem with diesels is soot. It comes out of the exhaust as particulates and is a major contributor to air pollution in cities. Even our perfectly tuned, no bad injector diesels do this so we either ban diesels from the cities and suburbs or we come up with a solution to reduce the soot.
Right now, the DPF and urea injection seem to be the best solution. If you don't like the remedies being offered, then it's time to invent something better. America used to be the most inventive nation in the world, so maybe it's time to stop whining and come up with a better solution.
No, I'm not a tree hugger, just a realist.

RE: best built 5er

You have a number of choices to make - and all of them are dependent on your financial situation and use for the trailer.
Mid-level units are Montana, Mountaineer, Cardinal, some Jaycos, etc. They are upscale from what you have and probably can be gotten with pretty decent insulation packages. They are not warrantied for full-time use, however.
High end units (Carriage, Excel, NuWa, Jayco Legacy, etc.) are built and warrantied for full time use. "Arctic" packages are available or standard on these units.
I think the thing to look at these days is the financial health of the companies you are interested in. We've had some pretty big failures and major cutbacks by a number of the manufacturers. Warranties are only good as long as the manufacturer is in business.

RE: 2008 Duramax ride

MY 3500HD crew cab dually does ride a lot better then my ext. cab short bed 2500HD did. Long wheel bases do smooth out the ride.
I had to chuckle about that stretch of I-40. I don't care what you are driving or towing, it could knock your fillings out. Is there a reason NC can't fix that road?

RE: Brake Controler

I love my GM IBC. It is far smoother then the Prodigy that I used before I got my 08 truck. It is completely proportional and really smooth. It is completely integrated into the trucks electronics and you can monitor its actions on the DIC if you wish.

RE: Pros/Cons of GM diesels

I've had an LLY (no it never even came close to overheating) and currently I have a LMM. Both are great engines with absolutely nothing more than routine maintenance.
BTW, that story about the 07 3500 sounds very fishy. The truck would still be under warranty and even if it wasn't, GM engineering would want to take a look at it. Also, 28 awg wire is pretty common in digital wiring harnesses (take a look inside your computer).
Visit the dieselplace.com for comments from owners about the various diesel engines (they have them all) that GM produces.

RE: Pullrite Super Rail Installation

It's really a pretty simple install on the long bed trucks. If you feel comfortable with an electric drill and a tape measure, you should be fine. If you have a half sheet of 1/4" plywood or a big piece of cardboard, you can make yourself a template to locate the holes in the bed.

I think to do it right and with the least amount of cussing, you might want to get one of the more advanced signal meters. You can get some ideas here.

RE: 2008 GM truck height

You can get any measurement you want for GM trucks here.
GM trucks don't vary too much in height between 2wd and 4wd but you can get dimensions for both. Unless you have done something to your truck, it is most likely that you won't have to do a thing to your trailer.

RE: Need info on wheel offset for Carriage 5th wheel

Which Morryde suspension? There is IS (four wheel independent) and RE (a rubber equalizer system). What was welded to what? Welding suspension components seems very strange.
I would definitely call Morryde (e-mails are nice but everyone has spam blockers these days). You will get a much faster response. If it is an IS suspension, they may be able to give you the name of a frame shop near you who could perform the repairs.
